NVIDIA Nemotron Bolt: Budget the Whole Local AI Workflow
By the ELYMENT AI editorial team · Free to read
NVIDIA released Nemotron 3.5 Bolt 74B-A9B 24GB on 15 October 2026 for local agentic workloads. Its memory-focused design makes desktop AI worth testing, but a model that fits is not automatically a workflow that performs well. Before buying or rolling out hardware, measure the complete task: model loading, context growth, concurrent requests, other applications and any external tools. Treat the advertised memory target as a starting configuration, then set acceptance criteria around completed work, privacy boundaries and operational headroom. [1][2]

What NVIDIA released, and what the memory label means
Bolt combines a hybrid Mamba-Transformer architecture with a mixture of experts. NVIDIA describes compressing a larger model to 74 billion total parameters with 9 billion active, followed by aggressive quantisation. The release includes a quantised checkpoint, a speculative-decoding drafter and an unquantised checkpoint for customisation. These are different deployment artefacts, not interchangeable download choices. [2]
NVIDIA says the quantised model is optimised for RTX Spark with llama.cpp and DGX Spark with vLLM. Its published speed tests use a named hardware and software configuration. They are useful reference points, not evidence that an arbitrary laptop, context length or business workflow will match them. [2]
Budget the running system, not just its weights
Build an inventory of everything that must coexist during a task: model weights, runtime buffers, context state, vision inputs, retrieval services, the browser and ordinary desktop applications. Measure peak usage on the actual configuration instead of converting the parameter count into a purchasing decision.
Context is especially easy to underestimate. Hugging Face documents that attention caches can consume substantial memory as inputs grow, and that memory-saving strategies may trade speed for capacity. It also distinguishes model-specific state, including Mamba caches. Do not apply a generic attention-cache formula to every layer of this hybrid model. [3]
Run the intended mix of tasks while the machine is doing normal work. A successful isolated prompt does not establish capacity for several staff, a busy browser or long-running agents. Record failures and slowdowns as results, not as reasons to quietly shorten the test.
Benchmark a completed business task
Choose a repeatable workload with a verifiable answer: extract fields from a representative document, search a bounded knowledge set or propose a patch against a disposable code fixture. Keep the same inputs and success rules when comparing local and hosted options.
Separate time to first useful response from time to finish the whole job. Include model loading, tool calls, retries and human corrections. An attractive token rate can coexist with a slower end-to-end task if the agent needs more attempts or waits on external systems.
A compact trial record should contain:
- Configuration: exact checkpoint, quantisation, runtime version, hardware and context settings.
- Workload: representative input size, requested concurrency and other applications running.
- Result: answer quality, peak memory, full-task duration, failures and recovery behaviour.
- Operating cost: hardware, support time and any external API or tool charges.
Keep local inference and local authority separate
Running the model locally does not make a web search, connector or remote tool local. Map where prompts, retrieved records, tool arguments and logs travel. Restrict the pilot to approved data and explicitly authorised tools; keep consequential writes behind the existing approval process.
Check the licence for the exact artefact being adopted. NVIDIA's model card identifies OpenMDW 1.1 as the governing model licence. Record that review alongside runtime and dependency decisions rather than assuming every component shares one licence. [4]
The practical next step is a bounded workstation trial, not an estate-wide purchase. Agree on usable headroom, acceptable task completion and a fallback before scaling. ELYMENT AI encourages evidence-led adoption that fits the business workflow, not just the model label.

Frequently asked questions
Does the 24 GB label describe the whole workstation budget?
No. Treat it as NVIDIA's model deployment target, then measure the runtime, context, other applications and tools on the intended system. [2][3]
Will the published speed apply to every laptop?
No. NVIDIA reports results for a specific hardware, runtime and benchmark configuration. Test your own complete workload. [2]
Does local inference keep every tool call on the device?
No. External search, connectors and remote APIs can still send data off-device. Review each tool and logging destination separately.
